I have a good friend - americanviolist - who is new to the Silmarillion fandom. :) I’ve been helping her so far where questions and genealogy and stuff are concerned, but while I’m on my mission for the next 18 months I won’t be able to help her as much. Could you guys just…take her under your wing? :) It would be much appreciated.
So I’m flying out Tuesday to start my mission. For the next 18 months I won’t be able to access tumblr, facebook, or the internet in general (except to write weekly emails to my family). I’ve tried to write a series of 18 posts that I can queue up and have posting during my mission, so that I don’t totally fall off the face of the earth, but I don’t think I quite succeeded. So I will do my best and see what happens. :)
As of tomorrow night I’ll be off tumblr for a year and a half. I wish you all the best, and hope you’ll forgive me in a couple years when I start liking and reblogging all your posts from two years ago. ;)
Rereading and liveblogging both the Silmarillion and LOTR (and probably the Hobbit, if only to point out connections between Thranduil’s caverns and Menegroth and swear up and down that the Arkenstone is Maedhros’ silmaril) (wow that got out of hand)
Re-watch and liveblog the Hobbit movies (haha and I won’t have seen any of them yet so the reactions will be 100% authentic!)
I’m hoping, once my memory is refreshed, to maybe start writing some meta posts on the Silm and shtuff. So that will probably happen, or at least an attempt will be made. :)
I’m excited to go to Brazil and serve, though I will miss you guys. :) Thanks for welcoming me into the Silmarillion fandom: I wasn’t expecting it, but I’ve definitely enjoyed it!
See you in 18 months!

“Even among the Eldar she (Galadriel) was accounted beautiful, and her hair was held a marvel unmatched. It was golden like the hair of her father and her foremother Indis, but richer and more radiant, for its gold was touched by some memory of the star-like silver of her mother; and the Eldar said that the light of the Two Trees, Laurelin and Telperion, had been snared in her tresses. Many thought that this saying first gave to Fëanor the thought of imprisoning and blending the light of the Trees that later took shape in his hands as the Silmarils. For Fëanor beheld the hair of Galadriel with wonder and delight. He begged three times for a tress, but Galadriel would not give him even one hair.”
“Fëanor created the Silmarils during the Years of the Trees in the Noontide of Valinor. They were named for and crafted of the hard crystalline substance silima, and contained some of the light from the Two Trees of Valinor made by Yavanna and Nienna - named Telperion the Silver, and Laurelin the Gold.”
…so does that mean when Gimli finally set Galadriel’s hair into crystal as he said he would, he ended up with a homemade Silmaril?
OH MY [GOSH].
ALL THE YESES.
